Veolia Environnement is one of the largest utility companies in the world based on the number of employees. With its headquarters in Paris, France, Veolia employed some 207,000 people as of February 2024. Another French utility company, Engie, ranked second with almost 100,000 employees.
Evolution of utility companies in France
Veolia and Engie are publicly traded energy, waste, and water companies. As of the beginning of 2024, they were the leading French utility companies based on revenue, with Engie reporting a revenue of 97.7 billion euros. Veolia traces its roots back to a water utility named CGE formed in 1853. It began operating under its current name in 2014 following a business restructuring. Engie was formed in 2008 by the merger of the energy groups Gaz de France and Suez.
Electricite de France (EDF)
Nationalized in 2023, the electric utility company Electricite de France (EDF) is not included in the ranking. In 2023, the company had almost 180,000 employees and a revenue of some 140 billion euros.
